As of today, both gates along the Mineral King Road are open, and the West Mineral King water system (that serves Cold Springs Campground) is up and running.  Enjoy your summer, and drive carefully!

I have taken much of the "Latest News" from our web site and posted the "non-date sensitive" news here to free up space on our site.  This will enable me to post more historic photos and articles, and not go over our storage limit.

Our site may be found here:

Our Dumpster Is Back!

From our MKDA President, John Crowe (originally published in 2017):

"Mike Botkin is overseeing the placement of a currently surplus NPS dumpster at the previous dumpster location. It is for non recyclable trash that can be fit into tied trash bags only. Mike will manually remove these bags for us and haul them to the Silver City dumpster. Do not "trash" the dumpster inappropriately or Mike will discontinue this service.

"Everyone owe s a big thank you to Mike Botkin for helping avoid the daily drive from east and west MK to Silver City."

Important Notice from our Sub-District Ranger

FYI - the garbage bin at Silver City was removed prior to this weekend.

There is a construction materials only roll off located at Tar Gap Trailhead this month for folks maintaining their cabins.  I have found several bags of garbage that have been disposed of in the roll off.  I have had to retrieve the bags twice in the last 4 days to dispose of properly in bear proof trash cans.  This is hazardous for me and the wildlife.  I am really disappointed in who has been doing this.  The different bag types and timing is indicating to me that it has been multiple parties.

I am not here to monitor the roll off 7 days a week to insure that I get the garbage out before the bears discover it.  This concerns me greatly.  Please spread the word that this is unacceptable.

Thank you.

Pack Station Photos

Pack Station Photos
Our resident artist, Jana Botkin, has been asked to do a pencil drawing of the Mineral King pack station as it looked about 30 years ago.  She would appreciate any photos of the pack station from the late 1980s to the early 1990s to borrow.  You may email digital scans to or mail prints (which will be returned) to P.O. Box 311, Three Rivers, CA 93271.

It looks like we're getting the first serious snowfall of the season.  Here's hoping for a lot more this winter!
