Local Artist Featured in Exeter Exhibit

Finally!  Some good news after intense focus on the KNP Complex Fire over the last two months!  Come and support our local artist, Jana Botkin, a Mineral King cabin owner. 

If you can't make the opening reception, her exhibit will be on display through January 9, 2022.

Community Meeting Notice

A community meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Three Rivers Memorial Building at 43490 Sierra Drive in Three Rivers, CA.

This meeting will be hosted by the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Staff to highlight the KNP Complex Recovery process. This meeting will provide a brief fire update, with the focus of this meeting, spotlighting on the Burned Area Emergency Response Team report and the upcoming plans for a safe reopening of Sequoia National Park.

Please wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

The event will be livestreamed on Facebook @SequoiaKingsNPS. A recording of the meeting will be made available after it concludes.

SPC Compass Newsletter October 2021 ‌ KNP Complex Fire After almost two months since it started, the KNP Complex Fire has slowed down considerably, thanks to some wet and cooler weather. As of Nov. 2, the fire has burned 88,307 acres and is 75% contained. The black lines on this map show the contained perimeter area while the red shows the active edges of the fire. Major damage to the popular, most-visited sequoia groves was minimized because of the amazing work that crews did to prepare the Giant Forest, Grant Grove, and other sequoia groves by removing dead and fallen plant material around trees and applying fire-resistant wrap around the base of some monarch sequoias, including the General Sherman Tree. However, the full extent of the damage to numerous other sequoia groves and all of the parks' natural resources remains unknown. We look forward with a guarded optimism that our parks will have fared well come spring and beyond. Sequoia Parks Conservancy would like extend our greatest thanks to all of the men and women who came out to battle the KNP Complex Fire. At the highest point, there were 2,118 resources from across the country assigned to manage and fight the fire including federal agencies, state agencies, city departments (fire, EMS, and law enforcement), hotshots, wildland firefighters, first responders, forest technicians, air support, and government contractors. While it's impossible to recognize each and every individual who joined the fight, we sure tried to! Cabin owner Gerry Strickland sent a few photos he took along the road, including some that showed the Phos-Chek sprayed from fire trucks to stop the fire from crossing the road.

Gerry commented, "The hard work by the firemen was evident everywhere in the orange retardant and cleared fuel on both sides of the road."

News Release - KNP Complex Update - November 2, 2021

KNP Complex Update November 2, 2021   Acres: 88,307 acres                                                                        Containment: 75% Start Date: September 10, 2021                                                  Cause: Lightning Jurisdiction: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks; Sequoia National Forest Resources: 344 Personnel including: 4 crews, 6 engines, 1 water tender, 1 dozer, 13 excavators and 1 helicopter   This will be the LAST update from California Interagency Incident Management Team 12 (CIIMT 12). The KNP Complex is transitioning at 6:00 p.m. this evening to the National Park Service Type 3 Team and the US Forest Service Type 4 Team.   On behalf of CIIMT 12, outgoing Incident Commander Mike Nobles wishes to express his sincere gratitude for the continued support and patience from the surrounding communities and visitors from around the world. Today, Nobles gave a final message to firefighters assigned to the KNP Complex saying, "No greater love hath no one this that a firefighter lay down their lives to protect and serve the communities and our precious national resources".   The incoming teams will continue to work together to ensure remaining suppression repair work is completed along with hazard tree mitigation. The following suppression repair work has been completed as of this morning: 56 miles of dozer line with 14 miles still in progress, 15 miles of handline with 4 miles still in progress. Firefighters remaining on the fire will continue with mop up operations where it is safe and practical to do so. Chipping work has been completed in the Silver City community and is ongoing for Mineral King. The fire has a low potential for spread as interior pockets of vegetation and heavy, downed logs are consumed. Hazard tree mitigation along roads is ongoing to provide for firefighter and public safety.
